Parker,

You must be wondering why I’m writing this to you and not to Helena, since you and I barely know each other. It’s a very long story of which I can only tell you a portion, the main detail being that you appeared on my radar by a mixture of sheer luck and coincidence, ‘the right place at the right time’ type of thing, just when I needed someone like you the most.

I know that at this point it’s unnecessary to care about what others think of me, but I still do. I’ve devoted all my life to ecology, to fighting to save the environment from the cruelty of mankind. Even now, after I’ve actively helped to all but eradicate the human race, I still think I’ve done the right thing.

In fact, I’m glad that it’s over, I’m not sure how much longer I’d manage to keep fighting this endless battle before going completely mad. Human cruelty and indifference are incredibly powerful enemies, almost indestructible, unless you go all in and someone pulls the trigger. You’ll soon understand what I mean, and how serious it is with the end of mankind. ONOH is not the only company to which I’ve dedicated my life and all my efforts. I’ve been a member of The Animals and Environment Protection Association and its sister, an activist group called The Collective, for almost fifteen years. They are the ones who made all of this happen.

But one man’s end can be another man’s beginning. The Collective has made sure that humankind wouldn’t die out completely. Isn’t it quite noble... and very different from the attitude most people have when it comes to other species’ extinction?

This brings me to you, Parker. I was tasked with finding an adult of certain qualities which the Collective had determined made them worthy of survival. Of a second chance. I’d been looking very carefully, and there weren’t many people who passed my judgement. You and Helena both got full marks, so to speak. But we’re not at school anymore. Not that schools are always fair, but I suppose the teachers were trying to make them that way.

I could only choose one adult. I didn’t toss a coin, I relied on reason. The new community, made up of the lucky survivors, will require certain professions which will help things run smoothly and ensure the group’s safety, comfort and success as a new society.

Ecologists are only needed now because the Earth is flooded with people who damage it. Do you see the logic? Helena would certainly bring her light, her warm heart and smiles into the new community, but you can do that too. Without all those masses, there won’t be any need for ecologists, while roofers will be all the rage. And so you made it into the finale.

If you still don’t see it as a victory, I have to also assure you that Madison will be spared and kept safe, just like you. She’s been vaccinated against the plague, I made sure of that personally.
